Bigger schemes

Events in Turkey this evening are a reminder that to the extent attribution of current problems in the Middle East to Sykes-Picot is true, it needs to be placed in context of all the factors creating the modern Turkish Republic.  The 1923 Treaty of Lausanne settled not just borders but the nature of post Ottoman Turkey,  but of itself couldn't resolve tensions in that identity.
